This is one of my favourite bars in Newcastle for drinks and listening to live bands, so I had pretty high expectations of their food – and it didn’t disappoint. The place itself has a certain level of originality; think unusual décor, talented bar staff and individuality that makes it stand out from the standard bar/restaurant.
There are a few menus (Restaurant, Bar, Sunday etc) which is something to keep in mind when visiting, depending on the day/time of your visit. We ordered from the Restaurant Menu; it has a varied selection of starters and sharers but there is not an extensive list of main meals. However, this only adds to the sophistication of the dishes in our opinion.
We were served an amuse-bouche shortly after being seated – free food is always a winner in our eyes and a good way to impress. Our starter was incredible (The Classic Camembert) and there is a good choice of starters, averaging around £7 for individual or £12 for sharing. The presentation of the courses was the real stand out feature of As You Like It. Attention to detail without being overly pretentious is a hard balance to achieve! For our mains we tried Slow Cooked Drunken Beef Chilli and Slow Braised Shin of Beef – both incredible. The average price of the mains is around £14.
Sadly we didn’t have room to sample any desserts, but they looked pretty good when looking at other people’s tables!
As You Like It’s restaurant has definitely impressed us, and although slightly pricier than other places in town, the quality of what you get makes it an absolute bargain! 100% worth a visit!
